FEBRUARY 15, 1574
8,5x 5 inch double-sided postcard about first printed book in Ukraine.
The Apostlos
(Acts and Apostolic Epistles)
is traditionally considered to be the oldest dated book published in the Ukrainian lands. The book was printed between February 25 1573 and February 15, 1574 in Lviv on funds of Fedorov himself, and he was also helped by the Lviv people.
In general, the «Apostlos» is a liturgical text for conducting Orthodox worship. Printed on 278 sheets of 25 lines of text on each page. Lviv «Apostlos» had a magnificent artistic design - engravings, coats of arms of his patron Grigory Khodkevich, the image of the Apostle Luke, the emblem of Lviv. In the end instead of the official afterword contains a written Fedorov’s «Tale of how the printing house started and how it was done». Autobiographical materials are subordinated to the publicistic goal: to raise the social prestige of the printing industry, to reveal its significance to society and thereby create a favorable climate for publishing activities.
The book is printed in two colors - black and red. The mirror set of the font is carefully selected, lines are smooth. The paper was produced here, in Lviv. A copy of the book - about 1000 - 1200 copies. To date, only 120 have been preserved. 5 of them are in the department of antiquities and rare editions of the National Library of Ukraine named after V.Vernadsky.
